220019 – Green Machine

  • Ugly Green Partscaster with B Bender

This is an older prototype, put together from various parts. It’s a “hard luck” guitar that has seen its share of changes and mods. It looks unloved, no doubt about it, but I have played it on many recording sessions and it is a go-to “picker’s guitar”. Comes with one of my “2nd Generation” cam-actuated B Benders, which I have since revised, and so the reduced price for this one.

Tele body was a wreck when I found it, but it works. I hacked together some parts, fixed it up with an ugly looking neck, and it plays great. Note that the neck has an ALUMINIUM SHIM, because the body didn’t quite fit (see photo). But the plate is solid and the neck sits well. Fairly thin profile to it, not a massively thick “club” style. Neck is maple and had suffered some bad staining treatments by the time I got it. So, Ugly Neck + Ugly Body = a guitar with a face that only a mother could love.

Rosewood fingerboard plays well. Tuners are Kluson type, made by Wilkinson. Standard Tele setup: 2 pickups and 3-position switch. Switch plate is reversed, for those Bill Kirchen volume swells with your little finger.

Alnico 3 single coil pickups in the neck and bridge. Old style ashtray bridge with compensated solid brass saddles. It’s got that great “quacky” Tele tone. Cam type B-bender sits behind the bridge. Only a small cavity routed on the guitar’s back, for the strap lever. As I said, it is one of my earlier prototype benders and is smooth and positive.

This guitar is lightweight, at about 5 1/2 pounds.
